Timeline of Diane's appearance

Since Diane has been introduced and in at least one arc, I thought it'd be fun to show everyone her appearence as time went on. Diane has had the most hairstyle changes out of any character I've ever drawn.
The first three pictures coincide with the first three in the David timeline. The one in the top left is her original look, the way she was waaaaay back in October 2003. Just like the first picture of David, Diane's hair was very tame, though the basic idea behind the hairstyle remians the same. The second is a group shot in which all the characters look like they're posing for a picture. The spike of hair on her right side is coming along nicely, and her hair is parted in the center now rather than over her left eyebrow. The next pic was drawn in August 2004. Even today I love how this one turned out. The only thing I don't like is the sharp cheek and chin, I don't know why I did that. Her hair looks pretty good at this point, though her hair spike reminds me of an axe. Oh yeah, you'll notice that most of these pictures have Diane with her arms folded. Simply put, I like the pose, and Diane was the first character I drew using it. So when I'm just doodling Diane, she always has her arms folded, I guess as a kind of tribute to her original look. This next picture was drawn almost two years later, in 2006. I hadn't drawn her for so long because, of course, she was removed from the comic entirely. Her hair is in rectangles now, similar to Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls. But I didn't forget to make one rectangle lower than the rest, so she'd still have that spike. This is one of the more drastic changes to Diane's design, which I would give up on later in favor of her 2004 look. The picture in the lower left was drawn only five months later, using the 2004 image as a reference. Her spike is a little more curvy, like hair should be. I think she looks kinda strange with a round chin. This picture was used as practice for drawing her in the soccer arc and indeed, her chin is still round throughout that arc. I prefer it more pointy, like in my other drawings of her (except the 2004 one, that one's a little too pointy). Bottom-middle, now we're getting to more recent times. This one was drawn in early September 2007. To mix things up, I drew her facing the other way. Normally when I draw a character looking one way or the other, their hair is symmetrical and I can draw them the same way. However, Diane only has a hair spike on her right side, and so it covers a part of her eye at this angle. I decided that making the spike go down past her neck would be cool, but now she reminds me too much of Ino from Naruto. One more interesting thing about this picture is that she has a good sized pair of breasts now. Since 2004 I had intended for her to have larger breasts than Tara, but I was always so embarrased when I drew them that they came out as just a couple of lines to indicate bumps on a chest. Now realizing I had taken a figure drawing class and worked on figure drawing in a few other art classes as well, I decided to try and not be embarrassed anymore. The only thing wrong with this picture is that her back seems too strait, like she's standing at attention. I made sure to correct the pose and make her look more laid back in the next pic... The last pic was drawn mid-September 2007, roughly a week later from the previous one. Ever since the soccer arc had ended I was increasing my focus on making sure Diane looked how I wanted her to look. I have not made this design official yet, though I think she looks very cute. The most noticeable change is the hair, I'm still playing with the idea of cutting it short in the back. The mole is back, as is her hair parting over her left eyebrow. The hair spike is back to being the same length as it was in late 2006, and I gave her small hair spikes next to her ears so she'd stop reminding me of Ino. In this picture she looks mature. Perhaps my art style is maturing too? |
